On September 27th, in New York, People Magazine, the AOL Foundation, and
the National Mentoring Partnership held an incredible Digital Heroes Campaign
kick-off event designed to help PowerUP youths find mentors. Celebrities
from all walks of life (e.g., actors, musicians, and athletes) joined
representatives from several national organizations in an effort to bring
youths and responsible adults together. The goal of the Digital Heroes
project is to test the viability of mentoring by way of e-mail. People
Magazine recruited a wide range of celebrities who were willing to develop
electronic relationships with inner city youths. The youths access the
Internet from PowerUp computer centers developed by Gateway Computers. |
